PublicaciónEvaluating the Guo–Campanella viscoelastic model(Blackwell Publishing Ltd, 2018)
;Augusto P.E.D. ;Miano A.C.Rojas M.L.Biological materials are characterized by complex structures and compositions, leading to viscoelastic behavior. Their viscoelastic characterization is important for the evaluation, design, and optimization of processes to ensure high quality products. Proposals of methodologies of analysis and modeling are critical steps in studying the rheological properties of these materials. In this context, a new model, the Guo-Campanella Model, was recently proposed to describe the stress-relaxation behavior of biological material. This work is an independent and impartial evaluation of this new model. It considers 10 different samples, comprising in natura and processed foods, from both plant and animal bases. For comparison, a Generalized Maxwell Model and the Peleg Model were also evaluated. The Guo-Campanella Model fitted the stress-relaxation data of evaluated products well, demonstrating its validity for describing the viscoelastic behavior of biological materials with different structures, sources, and processing. Finally, the Guo-Campanella Model parameters were evaluated and their interpretations and possible uses described. It was shown that the Guo-Campanella Model can be successfully used for future studies. -

PublicaciónIs glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency more prevalent in Carrion's disease endemic areas in Latin America?(Elsevier (Singapore) Pte Ltd, 2015)
;Mazulis F. ;Weilg C. ;Alva-Urcia C. ;Pons M.J.del Valle Mendoza J.Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) is a cytoplasmic enzyme with an important function in cell oxidative damage prevention. Erythrocytes have a predisposition towards oxidized environments due to their lack of mitochondria, giving G6PD a major role in its stability. G6PD deficiency (G6PDd) is the most common enzyme deficiency in humans; it affects approximately 400 million individuals worldwide. The overall G6PDd allele frequency across malaria endemic countries is estimated to be 8%, corresponding to approximately 220 million males and 133 million females. However, there are no reports on the prevalence of G6PDd in Andean communities where bartonellosis is prevalent. -

PublicaciónNomenclatural instability in the venomous snakes of the Bothrops complex: Implications in toxinology and public health(Elsevier, 2016)
;Carrasco P.A. ;Venegas P.J. ;Chaparro J.C.Scrocchi G.J.Since nomenclature is intended to reflect the evolutionary history of organisms, advances in our understanding of historical relationships may lead to changes in classification, and thus potentially in taxonomic instability. An unstable nomenclature for medically important animals like venomous snakes is of concern, and its implications in venom/antivenom research and snakebite treatment have been extensively discussed since the 90´s. -

PublicaciónThe northern Humboldt Current System: Brief history, present status and a view towards the future(Elsevier, 2008)
;Chavez F.P. ;Bertrand A. ;Guevara-Carrasco R. ;Soler P.Csirke J.The tropical ocean off the west coast of South America is notable for several reasons. First, it is unusually cool for an ocean that is so close to the equator with sea surface temperatures at 5 S off Peru as cool as 16 C when most other tropical locations are in excess of 25 C. Upwelling of cool waters brings phytoplankton nutrients to the surface, dramatically increasing biological productivity in this low-latitude region of few storms. S -
PublicaciónTowards sustainability: Photochemical and electrochemical processes applied for environmental protection(Hindawi Limited, 2018)
;Natividad R. ;Barrera-Díaz C. ;Martínez-Huitle C.A.Rodríguez-Rodríguez J.M.In the last century, public policy around the globe was mainly focused on economic growth leaving out of this perspective, social concerns and the environment detriment that this merely economic approach was causing. It was until the last quarter of the 20th century that people started to be aware of the growing poverty and of the jeopardy of the planet as a result of human being activities. In consequence, the concept of sustainable development emerged in the United Nations as a call to all countries to integrate economic growth with social needs and environmental protection, in such a way that our activities as earth inhabitants stopped compromising the quality of life and needs satisfaction of future generations.More recently, in 2016, effective 17 sustainable development goals established within the United Nations came officially. The embracement of these goals implies the design and execution of strategies that pursue poverty elimination by also addressing social needs and environmental protection. In this sense, the development of cleaner technologies and more effective sanitation systems is imperative and this has motivated the assessment of new technologies, many of them based on photochemical and electrochemical phenomena. Thus, this special issue aims to present original results regarding relevant aspects of such processes. For this purpose, ten manuscripts have been included.Within the framework of photochemical processes, different issues were addressed ranging from novel photocatalysis approaches, photocatalyst synthesis improvements, emerging contaminant degradation, and photoreactor modeling and simulation.
