PublicaciónA greenhouse interval between icehouse times: Climate change, long-distance plant dispersal, and plate motion in the Mississippian (late Visean-earliest Serpukhovian) of Gondwana(Elsevier, 2014)
;Pfefferkorn H.W. ;Alleman V.Iannuzzi R.The late Paleozoic ice age (LPIA) is the closest example that can be compared with current climate conditions. Near the beginning of the LPIA fossil plants of Mississippian (late Visean to earliest Serpukhovian) age indicate a widespread frost-free climate in a wide belt on Gondwana indicating an interval of greenhouse conditions between the earlier Visean and later Serpukhovian icehouse times. This warm-temperate floral belt has been named the Paraca floral belt after the locality on the Peruvian coast where it was first recognized. -

The new species is apparently restricted to areas within Andean montane forests that are less humid and devoid of large trees. -
PublicaciónAddressing post-stroke care in rural areas with Peru as a case study. Placing emphasis on evidence-based pragmatism(Elsevier, 2017)
;Miranda J.J. ;Moscoso M.G. ;Yan L.L. ;Diez-Canseco F. ;Málaga G. ;Garcia H.H.Ovbiagele B.Stroke is a major cause of death and disability, with most of its burden now affecting low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). People in rural areas of LMIC who have a stroke receive very little acute stroke care and local healthcare workers and family caregivers in these regions lack the necessary knowledge to assist them. Intriguingly, a recent rapid growth in cell-phone use and digital technology in rural areas has not yet been appropriately exploited for health care training and delivery purposes. What should be done in rural areas, at the community setting-level, where access to healthcare is limited remains a challenge. We review the evidence on improving post-stroke outcomes including lowering the risks of functional disability, stroke recurrence, and mortality, and propose some approaches, to target post-stroke care and rehabilitation, noting key challenges in designing suitable interventions and emphasizing the advantages mHealth and communication technologies can offer. -

PublicaciónBacterial Spore Load Profile along Production Chain of Canned White Asparagus (Asparagus officinalis)(International Society for Horticultural Science, 2012)
;Velezmoro Sánchez, Carmen Eloisa ;Pahuara, D ;Ramos, E ;Benites, E ;Teixeira, A ;Gomero, AZuniga, DIncreasing European and American market demand for high quality canned asparagus from Peru has prompted the need to identify and quantify the microbial spore load on fresh asparagus important in the establishment of safe thermal processes. This 2-phase study was made in an asparagus packing and processing company in Peru. In Phase I of the study, soil samples were taken from different field locations throughout the asparagus cultivars during the growing season. In Phase II, asparagus were taken as they moved through the entire production chain from field harvest during the cannery processing line to the retort. -
PublicaciónBending collapse analysis for thin and medium-thin-walled square and rectangular hollow shapes(Elsevier Ltd, 2021)
;Lavayen-Farfan D. ;Boada M.J.L.Rodriguez-Hernandez J.A.Thin-walled hollow shapes are of great interest in many industries with weight constraints due to their availability, low price, and strength to weight ratio. However, they are also prone to localized bending collapse, which can be used as an energy absorption mechanism during deformation. Up until now, industrial applications have relied on numerical simulations, non-standardized tests, and a handful of theories to address the bending collapse behavior. In this paper, a modification to the most widely used theory is presented and adapted for hollow shapes with greater thickness that cannot be considered “thick”. To verify the accuracy of the proposed modification, a comparison with a detailed FEM model, validated through various three-point bending collapse experimental tests, has been performed. The results seem to show that the proposed modifications can predict the maximum load and collapse stage behavior of hollow shapes with more accuracy than the original analytical model. Thus, the proposed modification may be used to predict the collapse behavior of commercially available square and rectangular hollow shapes in different fields of application. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd -

PublicaciónDeep Convolutional Neural Networks for Plant Species Characterization Based on Leaf Midrib(Springer International Publishing, 2019)
;Scabini, Leonardo F. S. ;Condori, Rayner M. ;Munhoz, Isabella C. L.Bruno, Odemir M.The automatic characterization and classification of plant species is an important task for plant taxonomists. On this work, we propose the use of well-known pre-trained Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DCNN) for the characterization of plants based on their leaf midrib. The samples studied are microscope images of leaf midrib cross-sections taken from different specimens under varying conditions. Results with traditional handcrafted image descriptors demonstrate the difficulty to effectively characterize these samples. Our proposal is to use DCNN as a feature extractor through Global Average Pooling (GAP) over the raw output of its last convolutional layers without the application of summarizing functions such as ReLU and local poolings. Results indicate considerably performance improvements over previous approaches under different scenarios, varying the image color-space (gray-level or RGB) and the classifier (KNN or LDA). The highest result is achieved by the deeper network analyzed, ResNet (101 layers deep), using the LDA classifier, with 99.20% of accuracy rate. However, shallower networks such as AlexNet also provide good classification results (97.36%), which is still a significant improvement over the best previous result (83.67% of combined fractal descriptors). -
