In the former case, a mechanical prosthesis is prescribed, while in the latter case either a mechanical or a myoelectric one are used depending on the patient’s preference and access to the technology. While a variety of prostheses designs are aimed to transradial amputees and plenty others are for partial hand amputations, like the 3D-printed open-source concepts that are activated by the user’s wrist, for a faster and more efficient treatment of hand amputations, one design should be adaptive for different levels of amputation without compromising the prosthesis performance. This work describes a powered prosthesis design with modular fingers and space constraints that allow it to be adapted to different levels of amputation. The prosthesis finger lengths could also be customized to user-specific anthropometry and, besides shafts, bolted connections and electronic components, the whole hand can be 3D printed. -

In the case of ancient buildings, their use, the materials aging, vibrations, environmental effects (temperature, rain, snow) and seismic events are all possible causes of deterioration and damage. A continuous Structural Health Monitoring can provide useful information for automated condition evaluations of the health-state of historic buildings; however, it is known that the effects of environmental conditions such as the variation of temperature and humidity can make this assessment difficult. Therefore, continuous monitoring of environmental conditions and dynamic parameters is needed to develop suitable models to assess the current health-state. Additionally, historical structures could be located in a place where the harsh local conditions (viability, electricity, internet connection, etc.) or the distance from the inhabited centers can make monitoring activities challenging. This paper reports an innovative dynamic and environmental remote monitoring system implemented on the historical adobe church of San Pedro of Andahuaylillas, built in the sixteenth century, suitable example of Andean historical earthen constructions, strategically located on an Inca road system, 60km south of Cusco. Firstly, the monitoring methodology is discussed, and subsequently, the case study is presented. The data is recorded locally and is automatically sent to Lima (1200 km away from Cusco) where the dynamic data is automatically processed to identify the modal parameters of the church. Preliminary results of a 6-month monitoring campaign is finally shown. -

;Pando M.A. ;Aguilar R. ;Lopez S.Zavala G.This chapter presents the results of a geotechnical and geophysical tests and a Deterministic Seismic Hazard Assessment (DSHA) carried out for the San Pedro Apostol de Andahuaylillas church in Peru, also known as the Sistine Chapel of the Andes for its magnificent paintings. The DSHA is one of the key components of the ongoing seismic vulnerability study led by the Engineering and Heritage research group of the PUCP University, in Lima, Peru. This structural seismic vulnerability study is motivated primarily because of the historical, architectural and artistic features of this church, built circa the late 16th or early 17th century, which was declared part of the Cultural Heritage of Peru in 2010. The church was built by the Jesuits in the sixteenth century over a pre-colombian huaca. Construction for the church was in two main phases. In 1570 construction started with a small chapel and the nave and main facade were completed in 1606. -
PublicaciónMechanical Characterization of Adobe Constructions Using Flat Jack Tests: Case Study of the Virgen de la Asunción de Sacsamarca Church(Springer Netherlands, 2019)
;Tacas K. ;Gonzales M.Aguilar R.This article presents the results of an experimental campaign using the flat jack technique in an adobe church called “Virgen de la Asuncion” located in Sacsamarca, Peru. The main mechanical properties of this construction were determined using the single and the double flat jack tests. The flat jack test is considered as minor destructive test (MDT), which is appropriate for historical buildings due to the temporary and easily repairable damage generated. Single and double flat jack tests were carried out on the north and east facades of the church. The single flat jack test allowed the estimation of the local compressive stress levels through the continuous monitoring of the state of strain. The double flat jack test allowed determining the local stress-strain behavior in each facade of the church. The mechanical properties obtained in this research are similar to values obtained by other authors for historical adobe buildings using different methods. -

Recent studies, promote the use of Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) with hashing techniques to improve the search accuracy. However, there are challenges to solve in order to find a practical and efficient solution to index CNN features, such as the need for heavy training process to achieve accurate query results and the critical dependency on data-parameters. -

;Brioso X. ;Calderón C. ;Aguilar R.Pando M.A.The main purpose of this article is to describe a proposed methodology to integrate modern construction management tools and procedures such as Lean Construction (LC), Building Information Modeling (BIM), and Virtual Reality (VR) in the planning phase of structural intervention of heritage structures. The proposed methodology that integrates these techniques is referred to as Lean Project Delivery System (LPDS). This paper explains the main principles, tools, techniques, practices and technologies, like VR, laser scanner, and photogrammetry that integrated result in synergy with the design, and planning components of the selection of the structural retrofitting alternatives. The proposed method associates the workflow design, workflow execution, LPDS elements and Management of Heritage Structures (MHS) requirements. The proposed LPDS methodology is applied to the St. Jerome Hall, a sector of the Church of the Nativity, located in Bethlehem, Palestine where the selection of the most feasible structural consolidation technique was required to retrofit this area due to some archaeological excavations. The conclusions drawn from the application of the proposed methodology to this case history may have some biases due to unique constraints in this project related to regional and project specific considerations. However, the paper hopes to contribute by providing an integrated framework for modeling and planning that can improve the state of practice in this area of knowledge. -

The library goal is to reduce the steps involved in a traditional data science roadmap. To do so, Sparkmach takes advantage of Machine Learning techniques to build base models for both classification and regression problems. These models include exploratory data analysis, data preprocessing, feature engineering and modeling. The project has its basis in Pymach, a similar library that faces those steps for small and medium-sized datasets (about ten millions of rows and a few columns). Sparkmach central labor is to scale Pymach to overcome big datasets by using Apache Spark distributed computing, a distributed engine for large-scale data processing, that tackle several data science related problems in a cluster environment. Despite the software nature, Sparkmach can be of use for local environments, getting the most benefits from the distributed processing tools. -

;Delgadillo R. ;Zonno G. ;Boroschek R. ;Lourenço P.B.Aguilar R.The shift of modal parameters induced by temperature and humidity effects may mask the changes of vibration properties caused by structural damage because the dynamic properties are often sensitive to changing environmental conditions. Furthermore, temperature and humidity are generally non-uniform and time-dependent variables, and therefore, their simple record in air or at a specific surface cannot be sufficient to obtain useful models to understand the relationship between the dynamic properties and environmental effects. The present paper aims at presenting preliminary findings in the task of quantifying the effects of environmental conditions (variations in temperature and humidity) on the dynamic properties of earthen constructions with a laboratory test campaign. The first stage of the research consisted on the analysis of a real structural system and for this three 1:1 scale adobe walls were built in the laboratory. This stage considered the performance of a long-term monitoring program recording environmental conditions, the surface and inner walls variation of temperature and humidity and the dynamic behaviour of the walls. The second stage consisted on the understanding the correlation between dynamic properties and environmental parameters. In particular, linear auto-regressive models with exogenous variables (ARX) and multiple linear regression models (MLRM) were built and compared. The paper presents the results of the measurements and shows that is possible to distinguish the changes of dynamic properties due to environmental effects in adobe walls. -

;Brioso X. ;Aguilar R.Calderón-Hernandez C.The present article’s main purpose is to describe the synergies generated from the simultaneous application of the Lean Construction philosophy (LC) and Management of Heritage Structures and Conservation Strategies (MHS&CS). We explain the main principles, tools, techniques, modern technologies and practices of the Lean Construction philosophy and Lean Project Delivery System (LPDS) that could integrate and make synergy with the elaboration of MHS&CS study, and with the implementation of the MHS&CS plan. We relate the workflow design, workflow execution, the LPDS elements and the MHS&CS requirements. The methodology employed is based on a review of the literature published in the last 10 years, in which information was collected from the International Conference of Lean Construction (IGLC) papers and a set of mainstreams in civil and building engineering journals. This paper hopes to contribute by providing a proposal for a MHS&CS plan adapted to the LPSD model.
